Gregoria Mariska Tunjung Secures Protected Ranking from BWF

KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesian women’s singles shuttler Gregoria Mariska Tunjung has officially received protected ranking approval from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) following an application submitted by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI). The status takes effect on December 30, 2025, and will remain valid for a minimum of three months and up to one year.

PBSI requested the protected ranking due to Gregoria’s medical condition of vertigo, which requires intensive treatment and a measured recovery period. During this time, she will not be able to compete in international tournaments listed on the official BWF calendar.

“We respect and appreciate the BWF’s decision to approve the protected ranking request for Gregoria Mariska Tunjung,” said PBSI Head of Development and Achievement Eng Hian in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 30, as quoted by Antara.

Eng Hian explained that the decision allows Gregoria to focus on her recovery without worrying about losing her position in the world rankings. He stressed the importance of maintaining her condition so that she can return to competition at the highest level.

“PBSI is committed to accompanying Gregoria throughout her recovery until she returns in top form,” he added. The federation has prepared full support from its medical team, coaches, and psychologists.

The BWF approved the request after reviewing documents and evaluation results submitted by PBSI. With this status, Gregoria will be able to use her last ranking when registering for official tournaments once doctors declare her fit to compete.

The protected ranking policy is designed to safeguard athletes who suffer injuries or medical conditions, ensuring their rankings do not drop significantly during periods of absence. The system is widely used to maintain the stability of professional athletes’ careers.

During her recovery, PBSI has pledged comprehensive assistance covering physical, technical, and mental aspects. The federation hopes Gregoria will recover soon and return to strengthen Indonesia in international competitions.

PBSI also called on the public to continue offering moral support, believing that encouragement from fans will accelerate her recovery and boost her fighting spirit. ***
