KBRN, Jakarta: Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta has seen a flood of visitors during the Christmas holiday, with 50,211 people recorded on December 25, 2025. Management predicts the number could climb to 80,000 on New Year’s Day 2026.
To handle the crowds, the zoo has reinforced visitor guidelines, including a fine for littering. “If you throw trash carelessly and get caught, we will impose a fine of IDR 500,000 (USD 31.35),” said Ragunan Zoo spokesperson Wahyudi Bambang on Monday, December 29, 2025, as quoted by Antara.
The penalty is based on Regional Regulation No. 3/2013 on waste management, which prohibits littering in public spaces. Sanitation officers and authorized personnel will enforce the rule, with fines deposited into the city treasury.
Zoo officials also issued several reminders for visitor safety. Parents are urged to keep a close watch on their children, while guests are strictly prohibited from crossing enclosure barriers.
“Please be careful not to cross the enclosure boundaries. Don’t even try; if you’re caught, we will take action,” Wahyudi emphasized.
With unpredictable weather, visitors are advised to come prepared. “We urge visitors to anticipate rain by bringing umbrellas, raincoats, or other protective gear,” he added.
To enrich the holiday experience, Ragunan Zoo has prepared special animal-feeding attractions with a festive theme. These activities will be held at the Schmutzer Primate Center, giraffe enclosure, Sumatran tiger habitat, hippopotamus pond, pelican area, Sumatran elephant grounds, and estuarine crocodile exhibit.
The zoo will remain open throughout the Christmas and New Year period, from December 25, 2025, to January 4, 2026. Operating hours have been extended from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., compared to the usual 7:00 a.m. opening. To accommodate the surge in vehicles, the management has prepared 10 parking zones with capacity for 6,000 cars and 12,000 motorcycles, accessible via the north and west gates. ***
