Museum Launches “Fun and Meaningful Holidays Without Gadgets” Program

KBRN, Yogyakarta: To enliven the school holiday season, the Kolong Tangga Museum in Yogyakarta is hosting a special program titled “Liburan Bersama Kolong Tangga” (Holidays with Kolong Tangga).

Carrying the theme “Fun and Meaningful Holidays Without Gadgets”, the initiative is designed as an alternative for parents seeking engaging holiday experiences for their children, without reliance on digital devices.

“Kolong Tangga Museum wants to invite children to spend their school holidays by rediscovering the joy of traditional play. These games are rich in cultural values, togetherness, and creativity,” said Irma Restyana, Project Director of Kolong Tangga Museum.

The program runs from late December 2025 to early January 2026, with sessions held daily from 10:00 to 13:00 WIB. Each session combines traditional games with creative workshops, offering children a unique mix of cultural and hands-on activities.

Participants will experience a variety of traditional games such as dam-daman, rubber-band jumping, ular tangga (snakes and ladders), engklek (hopscotch), dakon (mancala), kelereng kemiri (candlenut marbles), and mikado.

Alongside play, children will take part in creative workshops, designing tote bag collages, making their own dolls, assembling bamboo pinwheels, painting hats and umbrellas, and crafting friendship bracelets. All creations can be taken home as keepsakes.

“The fee is only around fifty thousand rupiah. Children not only get to play but also bring home the works they’ve created,” Irma explained.

She emphasized that traditional games are more than just pastimes; they embody stories, values, and cultural identity. The hope is that children will feel proud of these traditions and carry the experiences into their homes, friendships, and everyday lives. (Misni Parjiati/Sri Wahyuni)
