Strong Regeneration Propels Keroncong Tugu Toward Global Recognition

KBRN, Jakarta: The regeneration of Keroncong Tugu is showing promising momentum, evidenced by the active involvement of children and teenagers in preserving this traditional musical genre.

Arthur James Michiels, a 10th-generation musician of Portuguese descent and the son of the founder of Kerontjong Toegoe, expressed his pride in the current evolution of the art form. He noted that the participation of elementary and middle school students serves as powerful proof of the genre's enduring vitality.

“I am delighted to see that the seeds my father sowed in 1988 are now bearing fruit. Witnessing elementary and junior high school students performing keroncong so capably is truly extraordinary,” remarked Arthur during Malam 24 (Night of the 24th) celebration at Roemah Toegoe, North Jakarta, Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

With this robust wave of new talent, Arthur conveyed that he is no longer concerned about the future of Keroncong Tugu, asserting that the music will continue to thrive and evolve.

He further revealed a grand vision, which is for Keroncong Tugu to achieve global acclaim, a goal that aligns with the final wishes of the legendary keroncong maestro, Gesang Martohartono.

“We are confident that keroncong will remain preserved. In line with my agreement with Mbah Gesang, keroncong music is on a path toward the world stage,” he added.

Through this event, Arthur hopes the preservation of Kerontjong Toegoe will garner continued support from various stakeholders. Such efforts are deemed vital for maintaining cultural identity while introducing Indonesia’s traditional music to the international arena.

Among the young performers is Loli, a member of the children’s group De Meninas. A second-year junior high school student, Loli expressed her pride in being part of this artistic preservation, describing keroncong as an enjoyable form of classical music.

"We began learning it on June 26, 2024. The learning process is fun and exciting," Loli said before her performance at “Malam 24” celebration. (Annaila Azzahra/Sri Wahyuni)
