Indonesia Launches National Research Forum to Drive Science-Based Policy

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia took a step toward strengthening evidence-based policymaking by launching the 2026 Research and Innovation Communication Forum (FKRI), bringing together multiple ministries and research institutions to align scientific research with national development priorities.

The initiative was marked by a kick-off meeting held in Jakarta on Monday, January 19, involving multiple government institutions, including the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, National Development Planning MInistry/National Development Planning Agency), Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Ministry, Transmigration Ministry, and Investment and Downstream Industry Ministry/Investment Coordinating Board.

BRIN Head Arif Satria said the forum reflects the agency’s commitment to ensuring that government development policies are grounded in research data and scientific analysis rather than reactive decision-making.

“This is BRIN’s commitment to ensuring that every development policy is based on research data and in-depth scientific analysis, or what we call science-based policy,” Arif said, Monday, as quoted by

Antara.

He emphasized BRIN’s role as a national research integrator, tasked with consolidating research infrastructure and human capital across disciplines. According to Arif, research should not stop at laboratory work or academic publications.

“Research results must be able to address real challenges in national development, from resources such as food and energy, digital transformation, environmental issues, to other highly strategic concerns,” he said.

Arif added that FKRI is designed as a strategic platform that brings together BRIN’s diverse scientific expertise. He expressed hope that the forum would help align BRIN’s research agenda with national development priorities outlined in Indonesia’s Medium-Term and Long-Term National Development Plans (RPJMN and RPJPN).

In addition to alignment, Arif said the forum aims to strengthen cross-sector collaboration to solidify Indonesia’s innovation ecosystem, improve the government innovation index, and generate sustainable solutions to national challenges in pursuit of the country’s long-term development vision, Indonesia Emas 2045.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno welcomed BRIN’s initiative, saying it would support more accurate and precise policymaking.

“This support allows us to provide data- and science-based policy direction so that our policies are more accurate in addressing current and future societal challenges, and ultimately accelerate development as directed by the President,” Pratikno said. ***
