RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - State-owned Railways Company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has recorded a significant surge in public interest in rail travel during the current holiday season. This spike in passenger numbers occurred on the first day of the long weekend commemorating the Isra Mi'raj.
The state-owned enterprise served 184,063 passengers on Thursday, January 15, 2026. This figure represents an occupancy rate of 112.55 percent relative to total seat capacity.
Anne Purba, Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, explained that an occupancy rate exceeding 100 percent is a standard characteristic of long-distance train operations.
"The dynamic nature of passenger journeys allows a single seat to be utilized by more than one customer throughout the day. This reflects the optimized utilization of train capacity during the long holiday period," said Anne in a press release in Jakarta on Friday, January 16, 2026.
KAI also tracked passenger movement into the following day of the holiday period, with Friday’s ridership recorded at 152,613 customers.
For this long weekend, KAI has provided a total of 658,754 seats. As of Friday morning, total ticket sales have reached 564,272 units.
Pasar Senen Station emerged as the primary destination for travelers, recording 38,530 arrivals. Gambir Station followed in second place with 37,767 customers.
Wisnu Pramudyo, Acting Executive Vice President (PYMT) and Corporate Secretary of KAI, informed the media that tickets remain available for several routes and schedules.
"KAI continues to ensure that services remain safe, orderly, and seamless throughout the long holiday. We encourage customers to utilize official channels for their travel planning," remarked Wisnu.
The public is advised to promptly check availability and purchase tickets via the official Access by KAI application to ensure a more comfortable and well-planned holiday journey. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
