RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has formally issued Ministerial Decree No. 8/2026, appointing an official executor for the protection, development, and utilization of the Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat, which has now been reaffirmed as a National Cultural Heritage Site.
Minister Fadli emphasized that the designation carries broad implications for the preservation and sustainability of the historic palace complex.
“This recognition requires that protection, development, and utilization efforts be carried out in accordance with existing laws and regulations, as part of the Ministry of Culture’s responsibility,” Minister Fadli said in an official statement on Sunday, January 18, 2026, as quoted by
Antara. The Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat was first declared a National Cultural Heritage Site in 2017 through Ministerial Decree No. 208/M/2017. Minister Fadli stressed that the site must continue to be safeguarded and managed responsibly to ensure its long-term preservation.
As part of this commitment, the Ministry appointed Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Harya Panembahan Agung Tedjowulan to oversee the protection, development, and utilization of the Keraton.
The appointment aims to ensure that all management activities are conducted in an accountable, transparent, objective, efficient, inclusive, and participatory manner.
Minister Fadli called on all stakeholders to uphold their responsibilities in preserving and utilizing the historic site, underscoring that collaboration across institutions is key to sustaining the Palace's role as a strategic space for advancing national culture.
“We hope for continued support from ministries, government agencies, local authorities, and the private sector so that the Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat remains preserved and proportionally serves as a strategic cultural hub,” he added.
Surakarta Mayor Respati Achmad Ardianto echoed the sentiment, describing the Palace's preservation as a reflection of the nation’s commitment to cultural heritage.
“We, the people of Surakarta, will always care for our culture because this is where its heart lies. The sustainability of the Palace serves as an important stimulus for us at the City Administration to continue supporting cultural practices, from traditions and performing arts to literacy,” he said.
The Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat encompasses three key areas: the northern and southern outer sections of the Baluwarti fortress, and the inner grounds within the Cempuri walls.
The site contains at least 74 significant buildings that reflect Indonesia’s historical and cultural journey. It also serves as a living space for more than 35 elements of Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTb), including customs, performing arts, traditional skills, and knowledge of nature and the cosmos. ***
