KBRN, Gunungkidul: The Gunungkidul Tourism Agency in Yogyakarta recorded 223,000 tourist visits between December 15 and 28, 2025, with most visitors heading to the South Coast.
Supriyanta, head of the agency’s Destination Development Division, said the surge in visits was driven by the year-end holiday season, which coincided with school breaks.
“This resulted in a significant increase compared to previous months,” he said on Monday, December 29, 2025.
Despite the strong numbers, the agency is still working to meet its annual target. The Gunungkidul Regency Administration set a goal of 3.1 million visits for 2025. As of December 27, the region had recorded 2,264,666 visits, leaving time to meet the target before year-end.
Supriyanta noted several factors that had contributed to a decline in tourist arrivals earlier in the year. These included a bus accident involving students in Mojokerto, East Java, in early 2025, a ban on school study tours imposed by the West Java administration, and unfavorable weather conditions.
