KBRN, Jakarta: Dozens of Minangkabau figures and representatives from other parts of Sumatra gathered at the home of architect Yori Antar in Cinere, Depok, on Sunday evening, December 28, 2025.
The meeting served as a reunion for the traditional house construction and restoration team that completed work in the Seribu Rumah Gadang area of South Solok in August 2025.
Beyond renewing ties, the gathering became a moment of communal prayer and solidarity for Minangkabau communities and other regions of Sumatra that have been affected by flash floods and landslides since late November. Guests, dressed in traditional Minangkabau attire, joined the warm and solemn event.
The cultural atmosphere was highlighted by a performance of the Indang Baindangkan Dance, a traditional Minangkabau art form, choreographed by Siti Suryani and featuring musical arrangements by Armen Suwandi.
Two dancers from the Makara Community, Indonesiana Ayuningtyas and Adelia Ghina Hanna, delivered the performance after training under professional instructor Anin Fuji Hastuti.
The Indang Baindangkan Dance reflects acculturation between Islamic and local Minangkabau traditions. The art form was originally introduced to Padang Pariaman by Islamic scholars from Aceh.
Fitra Manan, head of the Makara Community, emphasized the dance’s philosophical values of unity, resilience, and harmony. “The Indang Baindangkan dance was chosen for this event because of its noble message and our desire to inspire brothers and sisters in Sumatra who are grieving due to natural disasters through art,” he said.
The energetic and spirited performance received warm appreciation from the audience. Through this gathering, art and culture were reaffirmed as unifying forces, strengthening hope to rise together in the face of grief and ongoing challenges. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Martina)
