KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia is poised to take a central role on the global stage as the sole nominee to lead the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in 2026. While the nomination marks a significant diplomatic milestone, it has sparked domestic and international calls for the government to accelerate the resolution of its own outstanding human rights cases.
The nomination, put forward by the Asia-Pacific Group under the regional rotation mechanism, coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Council’s founding. If confirmed on January 8, the presidency is expected to be held by Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro, Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
While the appointment is a badge of diplomatic prestige, experts warn it brings a higher level of scrutiny. Saurlin Siagian, a Commissioner at the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), emphasized that Indonesia must lead by example.
"This consequence demands serious commitment from the government in managing human rights issues," Saurlin said during a dialogue with RRI on Saturday, December 27, 2025.
"The 'homework' of lingering human rights cases must be handled more seriously. The world will judge the leadership of the Human Rights Council based on how the presiding country handles its own affairs,” he added.
He credited the strong role of Ambassador Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro in securing the unanimous support of the Asia-Pacific region, noting that the position carries immense responsibility for Indonesia’s human rights diplomacy.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the nomination, viewing it as a testament to the country’s independent and active foreign policy. Indonesia currently serves as a member of the UNHRC for the 2024–2026 term.
"We are grateful for the nomination as the sole candidate. This support reflects Indonesia’s track record as a 'bridge builder' for human rights. Indonesia consistently fights for humanitarian issues and maintains an independent stance," said Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang
The official determination of the 2026 presidency is scheduled for January 8, 2026. If successful, Indonesia will be at the helm during a landmark year for the Council, providing a platform to influence global human rights standards. (Naura Sofia/Bambang MBKA).
