KBRN, Jakarta: Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Affairs (Menko PMK) Pratikno announced on Monday, December 29, 2025, that 1,050 temporary shelters (huntara) have been successfully established for residents displaced by floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
During a strategic press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, the Minister detailed a massive inter-agency effort where the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and local administrations delivered 450 units, while Danantara and various State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) contributed 600 units. This housing initiative is a central part of the government's year-end strategic plan to provide immediate stability for thousands of disaster victims.
The construction of these units is a collaborative effort between national agencies, state-owned enterprises, and local administrations. "As of December 28, 2025, temporary shelters in three provinces have begun construction, with the total number of units currently in progress or completed reaching 1,050. BNPB together with regional administrations have built 450 units, while Danantara along with BUMN have built 600 units," he said, as quoted by Antara.
Minister Pratikno further explained that the natural disasters have also significantly impacted economic activities across the three provinces. Specifically, 112 traditional markets in Aceh were affected, with only 18 currently restored to full operation.
Similar economic challenges are being addressed in the other impacted regions with varying degrees of success. "In North Sumatra, there are 47 affected markets, 46 of which are already operating, while in West Sumatra, three markets were affected and two of them are back in operation. The government will continue to accelerate the reactivation of traditional markets through infrastructure arrangement, cleaning, and support from various ministries and agencies," he explained.
Regarding the official disaster status, the Minister reported that more than half of the affected areas have moved into the next phase of recovery. As of Monday, December 29, 2025, many regions have transitioned from the emergency response phase to the transition phase for rehabilitation and reconstruction.
In Aceh, seven regencies or cities have moved into this transition phase, while 11 others have extended their emergency response period. Similarly, North Sumatra has eight regions in transition and eight remaining in the emergency response stage.
West Sumatra shows the most progress toward reconstruction with 10 regencies or cities in the transition phase and only three remaining in emergency response. "The regions extending their emergency response status aim to ensure those areas are better prepared to enter the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase," he concluded. ***
