Govt Accelerates Recovery Efforts After West Sumatra Flash Floods

KBRN, Lima Puluh Kota: The Indonesian government continues to restore areas affected by flash floods in West Sumatra, accelerating rehabilitation and reconstruction to enable communities to resume normal activities as quickly as possible. Temporary housing is among the assistance provided to residents.

As of Tuesday, December 30, 2025, construction of shelters was underway in several regencies and cities across West Sumatra. In Lima Puluh Kota regency, shelters are being built in Koto Tinggi village, Gunungomeh subdistrict.

In the Agam regency, construction is underway in Salareh Aia village, Palembayan subdistrict. Padang Pariaman regency is building shelters in Asam Pulau and Anduring villages in the 2x11 Kayu Tanam subdistrict, while Tanah Datar regency is constructing shelters in Jorong Padang Kunyuk and Bungo Tanjuang villages. Padang city has also begun construction in Kapalo Koto village, Pauh subdistrict.

Teams from the Ministry of Public Works, the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), and local residents are working together to level land, build foundations, and install shelter frameworks. Heavy equipment has been deployed to support construction in affected areas.

Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said the government is still collecting data on houses with light, moderate, and severe damage.

Preliminary figures show that 68,850 houses suffered light damage, 37,250 sustained moderate damage, and 56,108 were severely damaged. In total, 213,432 homes were affected in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

The government has allocated IDR 15 million for houses with light damage and IDR 30 million for those with moderate damage. For severely damaged homes, temporary and permanent housing will be provided, along with a Housing Waiting Fund of IDR 600,000 per month.

“Last night, we held a meeting on housing damage. Those with minor and moderate damage will receive IDR 15 million and IDR 30 million, respectively. The government is also preparing temporary housing for those with severe damage, as well as providing a Housing Waiting Fund for those temporarily living there,” Tito said.

He added that aid distribution is being expedited to ensure residents receive assistance immediately. Recipient data has been verified to ensure aid reaches those in need directly. “We expect data collection by name and address for houses with minor, moderate, and severe damage. The local administration will prepare it,” Tito said. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Martina)
